Why does artificial jewellery turn black?
Most fashion jewellery has a metal base with a thin gold or silver plating. Moisture, sweat, perfume and air slowly react with the metal underneath, which causes darkening. Pakistan's humid summers make this happen faster.

- Jewellery goes on last. Apply perfume, body spray, lotion and makeup first, let them dry, then wear your jewellery.
- Take it off first. Remove jewellery before washing your face, doing wuzu, showering or exercising.
- Keep it away from water. Don't swim or wash dishes while wearing plated jewellery.
- Wipe after wearing. Gently wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth to remove sweat and oils.
- Store pieces separately. Use small zip-lock bags or a box with compartments so pieces don't scratch each other.
- Keep air out. Squeeze the air out of zip bags. Adding a small silica gel sachet helps absorb moisture.
- Avoid bathroom storage. Steam and humidity speed up tarnishing – keep jewellery in a dry drawer instead.
How to clean artificial jewellery safely
- Use a soft, dry cloth for regular cleaning.
- For dirt, dip a cotton bud in a little mild soapy water, clean gently, then dry completely straight away.
- Avoid toothpaste, lemon, baking soda or harsh chemicals on plated pieces – they can remove the plating.
